Travel style tips
I “travel” often, so I wanted to share a few travel style tips. I say “travel” because I go to Los Angeles a lot and I’m not sure if a 50 minute plane flight counts as actual traveling. Sometimes I do take the train though, which is about 7 1/2 hours, so that would count! I also love road trips and have gone on road trips to stalk follow see the Backstreet Boys on tour many times (*cough* Every tour since 2000 *cough*). These tips are geared more toward winter traveling because, it’s winter. Duh.
*Jeggings: Gap. Sweater: Thrifted. Scarf & Sunglasses: Forever 21. T-Shirt: Urban Outfitters. Boots: Steve Madden (gift).
Yes, that is my house. Please don’t stalk me.
Tip #1: Dress comfortable: Stretchy or cotton fabrics that are easy to sit in for long periods of time are best. It is important to dress comfortably when traveling, because more than likely, you do not have immediate access to your clothes or a place to change. When I fly, I can get away with wearing jeans and maybe a chunky heel here and there, but especially when traveling in a car (bus or train) when you are sitting for long periods of times, I recommend jeggings or leggings (I need the stretch so I can curl my legs under myself to get comfortable), or a dress/skirt. Shoe wise, I would not wear anything with buckles or laces, giving me quick access to air out my feet get comfortable quickly. This particular outfit was for a drive home from San Jose, which is about 90 minutes from me, so I chose jeggings and because it was January, I had a sweater and a scarf to keep me warm in the car; knowing who I was driving with, I knew they would not want the heater on as much as I would. Which brings me to my next tip…
Tip #2: Dress in Layers: It is essential to layering your clothing when on a long trip, especially in the winter. For example, depending on who you are traveling with, there is a chance that there will be a disagreement on the level of the heater in the car, which will then ensue a long, seemingly friendly, fight with each person trying to turn the heater up or down. Sounds innocent, but it can get violent; accidental scratches and swerving on the road are not worth the heat! If you layer, you can be as warm as you want, while the other can be as cool as they need to be. If it ends up warming up as the day goes on, you’re able to take off a layer or two.
Tip #3: Pack Clothes with Remix Abilities: I start planning my outfits for my weekend getaways a few days in advance. I like to keep it simple and keep it to one bag (which is not always possible with me). I always choose those jeans that go with everything, one pair of flats and one pair of heels or boots, the jacket that can be casual or dressed up, and more accessories than separate pieces to make the outfit different. I love reading The Delightful Dozen to see how they remix their clothes.
Oh, and some cute sunglasses are a given.
Those are really the only tips I have. I am aware that I mislead you into thinking I had some valuable insight into how to dress for travel, but honestly, it’s that simple.
I would probably wear this on a flight as well. I’ve gotten pretty good at getting through security quickly: pull out your ID and ticket before you get to the front of the line, grab a bucket for your things even if you have to wait to put it on the conveyer belt, don’t fight and just take off you shoes and jackets/sweaters. Basically, just follow the rules they give you and don’t be that person who needs to “stick it to the man” or try to get away with sneaking things through. Boots can be controversial in the security line, but these slip on and off easily and don’t have any buckles so they are actually faster to get on and off than someone wearing sneakers.
By the way, I got that suitcase at the Antique Faire that is held in Sacramento every second Sunday of the month. It is equal parts cute and annoying. I used it to travel one time and I will most likely never again unless it is only for one night. The suitcase itself is extremely heavy when empty, but add 3 or 4 days worth of clothes and try to carry it all the way through an airport with the blunt, plastic handle? Well, you are just asking for blisters on your hand. Sadly, it was just a prop in this photo shoot.

These are fantastic tips, I am also the one person in the car who always wants the heat on max, so layers are really important. You look very adorable here, I love those boots.

Love this post & you really did have great tips! The only one I don’t practice nearly enough is the remix ability of what I pack… gotta work on that. As for the suitcase, prop or not, it’s adorable!! 🙂

Oh yes, definitely agree with all these tips!
My family and I travel a lot, so I’ve quickly discovered the importance of all three bits of your advise.
I usually wear skirts, but when we’re on the road, I stick to leggings and jeans. Accessories are a girl’s best friend when she’s on the road and wants to look stylish! Haha, they dress up any casual look.
I love your basic, chic, “travel” outfit 😉
You look amazing! That scarf and cardi are perfect. And so are your boots!

Definitely agree with all of these tips, this is how I love to dress for travelling to! So annoying that your suitcase is a prop only, it would be perfect if it was easy to transport! xx
I like, no loove your suitcase! it’s wonderful!

Wonderful tips! I traveled to Romania last winter and I think everyone in my group thought I was crazy because I was wearing a dress for our travels – which included a couple of long layovers. But since I was wearing layers and the material was super comfortable, I felt great the whole time!

whole heartedly agree with all of these tips, especially the dressing in layers one! Planes can be so cold so bringing a light sweater or cardigan is an essential 🙂

Natalie
I love the oversized sweater, perfect to cuddle up in for those cold planes, and you are still looking so chic. love your luggage as well!
Oh you look so cozy! But the boots dress you right back up! And that suitcase! I adore it! So cute! I was just talking about how I really need to find an antique suitcase… but it’s more for a decoration aspect, not conveniently functional aspect.

That suitcase is so cool! It’s a shame it’s not very practical.
I have an old suitcase that I decoupaged and now I use it as storage for sewing supplies! That way, it’s still useful, and looks pretty cool as decor.

Very sensible advice. I also like having lip balm, lotion and sunglasses within reach at all times. You never know when you’ll need them while you’re traveling!

It’s become somewhat of an art! You know, the checking in, going through security, then finding your terminal and gate? haha, piece of cake for me now 🙂 Glad to be a new follower- can’t wait to see more posts from you!
