Full of fall

Obligatory apple picking post!

It is that time of the year right? My blog roll is filling up with posts about apple picking, pumpkin this and that, and flannel everywhere you look. I could not be happier.

Now it’s my turn.

My mom claims that I have been apple picking before, but if there is no memory, or proof (hello, take photos much?), then it did not happen. You know, kind of like, “If you ate the best sandwich in the world, but it was not Instagramed, did it really happen;” The modern day version of “If a tree fell in the woods and no one was around, did it make a noise?”

So welcome to my first apple picking experience! Unfortunately, it was still pretty warm. However, I decided to dress like it was fall. I only got a little sweaty during my laborious day working in the fields.

We picked about fifteen pounds of apples and after two large batches of apple butter, which I cannot stop putting on everything, we still have a ton of apples. I don’t like apple pie, so I’m hoping to find some savory recipes to use the rest of the apples in. Suggestions are welcome!

I was surprised that the majority of orchards were not pick your own orchards. We did not drive an hour to pick up a box of apples as easy as we can from the grocery store or the farmers market; we wanted the experience. Autumn and the holiday season is all about making things harder than they need to be, for the experience.

Luckily we found an orchard that where we could pick our own apples. There is nothing like stomping through rotten apples to get to the big juicy ones.

The majority of the apples were green. Even the red delicious apples. Even the RED delicious apples. It’s been quite hard for me to eat a green red delicious apple. It’s even harder to distinguish what type of apple I am about to eat when they are all green.

Obviously we went through the corn maze. It was more like a corn path. Or I am just smart enough to know how to get through a corn maze.

On the other side? Really big, really dead, sunflowers.

I really like your pictures! Apple picking is definitely an obligatory fall activity, but it’s just so hard when I live in socal and it’s in the 90s this week!

Yay for apple picking! It’s such a classic fall activity, but I haven’t done it for years. Looks like you had a great time! Love the flannel and the boots! For a savory recipe featuring apples, I’ve made a vegetarian stuffing/dressing that is to die for. Yummy and a bit spicy! Here’s the recipe: http://bakingbites.com/2006/11/vegetarian-stuffing/. I know it’s typically a Thanksgiving/Christmas dish, but it’s tasty enough to enjoy anytime 🙂

I wanted to go apple picking this year sooo badly, but apparently none of the orchards in my area have enough apples to pick 😦
Flannel I think is probably the ideal print to be wearing to pick apples. It just screams Fall

    I don’t even…

    • Maybe I’ve just never had a good piece! I’m not too keen on baked apples… it’s a texture thing!

  19. I wish there was apple picking around here because I want to do that! Apparently the closest fields are two hours away and the apple crop was super small this year. So sad. This looks like a ton of fun though and you definitely look perfectly dressed for fall even though it was a little bit warm.
