Hello? Anyone still around?

Excuse my absence. I’ve been sick and have now come to diagnose myself with bronchitis. Last week I felt like I was hit by a big rig; It was like I had the worlds worst hangover for an entire week. Do you know what worse than the worst hangover? The worst hangover without the fun the night before. This week it’s down to sniffles and coughing, but I could probably fill an ocean with the fluid rattling around in my lungs right now. It’s so nice not to have health insurance. I am counting down the days until this wedding of mine; health insurance by marriage!

I am so ready to be healthy again. I never thought I would say this, but I really miss working out and running! I have definitely been lying low, trying to rest up. Usually when I am sick, I keep going so I don’t get behind or miss anything, and then I end up sick for an enitre month. I’m trying hard this time to do it right, but time is really testing my patience!

In other news, if you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you might have seen the other day that I did some extra work on a made for TV Christmas movie with Dean Cain. It’s probably the lowest form of work someone in LA can get, especially considering I was not paid for it. But believe you me when I say it was a dream come true. I have wanted to be in a made for TV Christmas movie my whole life. They are literally one of my favorite things in the world! I am cheese filled Christmas fiend and I was so in love with that day! The best thing is that I got called back to do more today! I am pretty sure there is a good chance my face might make it into the final edit for at least 1.5 seconds.

Is it Christmas yet?

A few things: I look like a watermelon. It is evident that I do not iron my shirts. My necklace is awesome.

This necklace is from Penh Lenh Deisngs, meaning “whole” in the Cambodian language, Khmer, and what makes them so special, is that they are a handcrafted jewelry line that’s working with Cambodian women rescued from sex trafficking. I was really excited to receive a piece of this beautiful line, not only because I think the necklace is beautiful, but for the empowering message it stands for. Penh Lenh’s mission is to empower these young women to pursue their life goals through quality education, vocational training, and advanced career opportunities.

I know it’s Friday. I know this is not a Friday Favorites post. Truthfully, I am getting a bit bored with the Friday Favoites series. I always end up scrambling to put them together last minute, often times trying to come up with something to share as I am typing it. I may change the format of it, or scrap it all together, but I need a bit of a break from how I have been doing it.

I don’t mean to break your hearts (do you get the pun in my title now?), but I made you some donuts to make up for it. That’s right, eat your feelings. That’s how I cope with sadness too. And happiness.

I love to bake and I have always wanted to attempt homemade donuts, because sometimes you just need a donut, but don’t want to be embarassed and buy them in public alone, wearing boyfriend jeans and an oversized sweatshirt and jacket without a bra. Instead, you want to whip them up at home super quick while wearing boyfriend jeans, and an oversize sweatshirt without a bra, but no jacket because the frying oil is make you very warm.

Not that that is what I was wearing. It’s just an example.

I usually bake from scratch but since I had some help from The Frosting Queens with their chocolate and vanilla all natural, ready to use frosting, I decided to take another shortcut and use Pillsbury Grands Homestyle biscuits. Just heat up about a half inch of oil in a pan and flip the biscuits when they are golden brown. It only takes a minute or so on each side.

And then I filled the donuts with frosting.

I said, “And then I filled the donuts with frosting.” I then proceeded to die a little with my first bite.

Super easy. Super quick. Super delicious.

To be honest, I am very weary of store bought frosting. I always, always make my own, even if everything else is a short cut. The Frosting Queens ready to use frostings passed my test. And they are a local Sacramento company, so they get bonus points for that.

Be sure to check out The Frosting Queens and check out a few other bloggers HERE who tested out the frosting as well! FeelFreeToRepinMineSoICanWinAWholeFoodsGiftCard, KThanks.

Also, I learned a lesson. When you steal your fiance’s camera, be sure to bring an extra battery or the battery charger because when the battery dies in the middle of a shoot and said fiance will not be in town for 4 more days, you will have to go buy a battery charger. And it will frustrate you. The holidays are not a time to be frustrated. But do you know how to cope with that frustration? That’s right, by eating a donut.

I am on a roll! Three posts in three consecutive days. You guys. Insane. Don’t get used to it, not right away, anyway. I do have plans to post more often after the big move, so these last few days were just a preview.

Yes, no, maybe?

So, it’s time for some new frames. I’ve had my current frames for about two years now and my face is ready for a new accessory. Warby Parker must have known somehow, or just thought I had outdated frames, and were kind enough to send me some pairs to try out at home. If you haven’t heard of Warby Parker, then you probably live under a rock. And in that case, it’s a miracle that you found my little space on the internet, but welcome.

Warby Parker is an online perscription and non prescription eyewear retailer that actually sends you five frames of your choosing to try on at home, with no obligation to purchase. Check out Warby Parker here!

Here are the frames that I chose to try on at home. What do you think?

p.s. I apologize for the dark photos. They were taken indoors at night, which is obviously the best time and place to take photos, and most certainly did not have anything to do with me losing track of time and having to take these the night before I had to mail them back. Most certainly not.

What do you think? Getting new frames is always an agonizing decision for me. It’s like picking out a new part of your face. Super important and super first world problems, I know. I am partial to any thick, black, rectangular frames (because of the wanna be hipster in me) so I am kind of loving Roosevelt and Crosby.

Thank you times a million to my Uncle for taking these for me!

It definately does not feel like Friday. Maybe because we had New Years Day off and having a day off thrown into the middle of the week creates the illusion of a new week when you go back to work.

But I have got to say TGIF anyway because, damn this holiday season has taken it out of me. That, or I just prefer weekends over weekdays. Duh.

Have you taken the Seeking Style reader survey yet? Quick and painless!

  • Listen to this: Hunter Hayes. My 14 year old cousin schooled me the other day. For a split second, I thought this song was by The Wanted. Only because I heard the radio say “wanted”, so knowing she’s a One Direction fanatic, I asked her if she likes The Wanted. “This isn’t the Wanted! This is Hunter Hayes!” If I had waited one second to ask and listened to the song first, I would have known that too. Moral of the story, think before you speak. Especially to a teenager. Also, listen to Hunter Hayes if you like a good pop country fusion.
    • Read this: 10 Things Girls Always do in Movies and Never in Real Life. The first one on the list sucked me right in: Answering the phone without saying hello, and hanging it up without saying goodbye. That is my number one movie pet peeve. Shut up, you have movie pet peeves too. If you like the first list, check out reader submitted peeves (why the “pet” before the “peeve”?), here. One that is missing, and probably a tie for my number one, is not using toothpaste when brushing one’s teeth in movies. There is no way you have that bright white movie star smile without toothpaste.

  • Watch this: Dance Like Nobody’s Watching. This girl is awesome; I wish I was this brave. And awesome. And that I could dance. The only thing I wish was different about these videos is that they were 1) Longer, and 2) People reacted more and danced with her. Prudes.
  • Eat this: Grilled Eggplant with Herbed Quinoa. Since everyone is pretending to be healthy in the new year, I decided to feature a healthy recipe in place of the usual cupcake/cookie/brownie/diabetes trifecta that I usually share. This recipe combines two of my favorite foods: quinoa and eggplant. If Sara was my personal chef, I think I could die happy. Happy and healthy. Her blog is not called Sprouted Kitchen for nothing. Please don’t judge me for admitting that I may have produced some drool thinking about this dish topped with some feta cheese. Like, Homer Simpson style.

EGGPLANT_06

  • Wear this: Firmoo. Firmoo is an online eyeglasses retailer. How is it possible to choose glasses online without even trying them on? Oh, it’s possible. With Firmoo, you can digitally try on every pair of glasses, read reviews of the frames, and browse through user submitted photos. Yes, that means that you can be sitting at home, in bed, in pajamas, munching on your favorite snacks, watching your favorite movie while simutaneousy reading the new issue of Glamour, trying on super cute and affordable frames. See how you can get a free pair here! Check out the pair Firmoo sent me!

  • Blog love: Cocorosa. She’s practically Carrie Bradshaw. Can I even say that? Can there ever be another? There might be. It might be Chantal. I want to be her when I grow up.

Jessica Simpson reference for the win. Confession: I still watch the Newlyweds on DVD. I secretly still hope that Nick and Jessica get back together some day. They can raise their babies together and film another reality show. It could be called “Newlyweds: Again”.Would you not believe in true love again if that happened?

And that is what I think about on my free time.

I wear this exact outfit approximately an inappropriate amount of times. Usually in a row on the weekends. What can I say, I’m an easy simple girl.

*Tee: Urban Outfitters. Jeans & Sandals: Thrifted via Crossroads (Steven Madden sandals for $16, what, what!). *Purse: C/O Francesca’s Collections.

I happen to be one of those people that carry their entire lives in their purse, so when Franceca’s sent me this I was kind of stoked. By kind of, I mean super really a lot stoked.

I had a pair of shoes in this bag this day, because who doesn’t like a mid day foot wear change? I’ve been known to keep every receipt I’ve ever gotten in my purse. Because you never know when you need to exchange that pack of gum from 7-11 that you bought 4 months ago. I also tend to bring an obscene amount of magazines with me when I fly (which is a lot; shout out to the long distance relationshipers!), so now they’ll actually be able to go into my bag.

Nothing is better than a white tee and jeans. Except when you can actually keep that white tee white. I never get stains on my clothes, except when I am wearing a white shirt. Imagine how fun it is when you’re out to lunch in your favorite white t-shirt and you have to check yourself after every bite to make sure that you’re keeping it your favorite white t-shirt. That’s what happened this day. Let’s just say it didn’t make it through unphased, but I did manage to get it out!

I’m gearing up to head down to Coachella!

I am so excited! I am excited to get away with friends, to camp, to not have a worry for three whole days, and of course, for the music and fashion I will be drowning in all weekend! If you want to keep up with me during Coachella, add me on Twitter: @seekingstyle! I will try my best, depending on how well my phone stays charged, to post tweets and pictures throughout the weekend.

I am going total hipster on Coachella’s ass. My planned outfits are an exaggerated version of my style, but let me tell you, my new style philosophy might just have to be “Dress everyday like it’s Coachella.” If everyone lived every week like it was Shark Week and dressed everyday like it was Coachella, I think we’d have a more peaceful world. Just throwing that out there.

Just a reminder, less than two weeks left to take advantage of 25% off an item at Francesca’s Collections with the promo code “SEEKING“. Check them out!

*Skirt: C/O Francesca’s Collections. *Shirt: Thrifted via Goodwill. *Boots: Thrifted via Crossroads. *Tank: Forever 21. *Belt: Found in my closet.

Speaking of Francesca’s, how cute is this skirt? I normally don’t gravitate towards colorful, flirty pieces (I dress like a boy most days. It’s OK, I like it), but this is adorable. Yes, I had to “boy it up” a little, as I said when I picked it out, but it definitely works.

IMG_2074-out

I’m working on trying to become more comfortable in skirts, shorts, and dresses, so I was surprised how comfortable I was in this all day.

IMG_2055-out

Does anyone have any last minute tips for putting together a Coachella survival bag? Besides an entire bottle of SPF 90 sunscreen for each day, I’m just assuming I’ll need a lot of hand sanitizer and some baby wipes. I predicted this weekend will be particularly dirrty. Yes, with two “r’s”. Christina Aguilera style.

Excuse my translucent legs. Don’t worry, in a couple months, they’ll be nice and sunburned.

I wore this outfit this past weekend in LA and we happened upon a $5 sample sale at Urban Outfitters. Who got in the hour plus line to wait? I did. Who found a loop hole to get up front and bought a sandwich to pass the line? I did. Who scored $5 BDG jeans? I did. Thrifty tip #4662: Go to sample sales.

You don’t know how hard it was for me not to title this post “Boats and Hoes“!

I went to Los Angeles this past weekend (hence, the quiet around here), and had the amazing opportunity, once again, to participate in the MusiCares 2012 Person of the Year event, honoring Sir Paul McCartney. I’ve volunteered in the past and have done every job from talent escort to door greeter (this year I was somewhere in the middle ha). It’s always a pleasure working these events because volunteers are invited to watch the show; the same show that 5,000 people paid $1,200-$10,000 a table to be at. I spent the night watching the likes of Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, Coldplay, James Taylor, and more perform. It was amazing. I look forward to this event each year. I also met Jack Nicholson (a very random guest) – as in spoke to him and shook his hand. In. Sane. By the way, if you ever meet Tony Bennet, be prepared. He’s a wild one! He likes to walk around in the aisle during the Cirque Beatles show. He was almost crushed by men on trumpet stilts. I cannot make this up!

*Dress: Forever 21. Shoes: “Kerry” in brown c/o Sole Society

This is not what I wore to the event – I just wanted to brag share my experience with you. I actually wore this to an early Valentine’s dinner with the boy. Since Valentine’s day is on Tuesday and I was in town this weekend (and next weekend actually), we went to dinner on Sunday at Firenze Osteria, which is the restaurant of Fabio Viviani from Top Chef! I am obsessed with Top Chef and Fabio has always been my favorite contestant from that show, so the fact that he has a restaurant mere miles from my boyfriend’s house makes me a very happy girl!

IMG_9956-out

Thank goodness I chose this shift dress for our dinner because dude, I ate. I ate a lot. I eat a lot in general actually, but we ate so much that we had to decline dessert. I’ve never said no to dessert before. I’m not saying we didn’t stop at the store and buy individual slices of cheesecake for later (to compliment the box of chocolates already sitting at home of course). I was happy I could hide my food baby in this dress.

IMG_9979-out

Have you heard of Sole Society? It is a service that sends you a “shoe closet” each month (based on a style quiz that you take, and can re-take or update as well). It is $49.50 per pair of shoes, but you can skip the month if you don’t find a pair you like – no obligations! Basically, you have access to a free personal shopper specifically for shoes. Kind of amazing right? Sole Society was kind enough to send me my first pair to review!

IMG_9981-out_RT

The first thing I need to express is how damn comfortable they are. Not only is the suede itself soft, but it feels like there are built-in inserts. I did not have achy (or cut up) feet at the end of the night! That is a big win for me with shoes. They are also extremely easy to walk in. The comfort plays a part in that, but the heel is actually a reasonable size. Sometimes I don’t want to wear heels that make me taller than my 6’2″ boyfriend, so it was nice to be able to get a shorter pair (but not that tacky gum heel short. Ignore that I said that if you enjoy those type of heels!). These also came at the best time since they match my new dress perfectly. I was ready to be tacky with black heels, but Sole Society saved me!

IMG_9961-outRT

Another reason I chose these is because I do not own a pair of peep toes. Is that a fashion fail? I’ve never been a big fan of my feet in general, so my first instinct is to keep the all covered up. These babies were the first to break my streak! And no, I am not looking for feet compliments. Because frankly, that’s just weird.

IMG_0005-out

So if something like Sole Society sounds completely awesome to you (which, I don’t know why it wouldn’t), I encourage you to check out the web site (click here) and sign up! Registration is free and you only pay if you choose a pair of shoes!

I liked them so much, I styled another outfit around them that will be up later in the week!
